Many families have been living in the area for a long time, relying on small kiosk shops for their food supply. The incident caused a stir as lawyers and police, arriving from the port side, began demolition using JCB machines. The contested area includes a club that, according to local claims, was never a political office, contrary to allegations of it being a former Trinamool office now attempting to become a club and school.

The Port Trust, which owns several plots of land on No. 2 Helen Keller Sarani near Majerhat station, had filed a complaint about the encroachment. Acting on the Calcutta High Court's order, officials moved in to clear the land.
